Mediawiki Duplicate Content Fix

Duplicate content on your Mediawiki website isn't generally considered to be a reason to receive a penalty by itself, it's simply considered a "bad practice" and any "penalty" will simply mean that Google chooses which page to index and which to devalue. Does duplicate content affect your ability to rank? No it doesn't. A penalty is where Google devalues your whole site for bad behaviour and duplicate content isn't bad behaviour if you're creating unique content.

Nevertheless, for those of you that want to remove duplicate content i.e. choose between www and non-www versions of your wiki pages, the fix involves nothing more that adding the following to .htaccess (located at your server root).

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]
